Just about everyone has asked this question at one point or another after either or cleaning out their computer. There are so many products out there that it can be hard to know which ones are actually good. The truth is there isn’t one “best” antivirus product. There are many different kinds of protection. The two most commons ones are antivirus software and firewalls. Antivirus software attempts to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software while firewalls are security measures to prevent access to computer systems. So what’s the difference? An antivirus program will find something that is infected on your computer and fix it.

That is, it’s good at removing infections. A firewall, on the other hand, will simple create a wall to sensitive system components so that malicious programs can’t just change anything they want on your system. In other words, antivirus programs are good for removing infections and firewalls are good for preventing them. Don’t make the mistake of installing a firewall when you need to get rid of an infection or install an antivirus when you really want a firewall. It’s a subtle distinction, which is why a lot of the internet security suites now have both so people don’t have to choose.
